Coca-Cola said it will change its packaging from green to clear plastic starting August 1, ending its iconic green bottle after more than 60 years of history, CNN reported.

Sprite's current plastic packaging contains green polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which often cannot be recycled back into new bottles, a key initiative in the company's hopes of reducing plastic waste.

'Removing color from bottles improves the quality of recycled materials,' Julian Ochoa, CEO of R3CYCLE, a plastic group that helps Coca-Cola improve recycling, said in a statement. 'After recycling, clear PET Sprite bottles can be remade into bottles, helping to drive the circular economy of plastic.'

The company said its users had also noticed an improved logo and packaging design on Sprite bottles, which had been refined to provide a more 'consistent look'. The usual green label will still be used on Sprite bottles.

In addition, other beverages in Coca-Cola's product range that use green bottles, including Fresca, Seagram's and Mello Yello, will also be switched to clear packaging containers in the coming months.

The beverage giant is often criticized for creating large amounts of plastic waste. In 2020, the company was named the world's No. 1 Plastic polluter by environmental firm Break Free From Plastic. Its packaging appears in public places such as parks and beaches in 51 countries, resulting in about 13,834 pieces of discarded plastic.

In 2018, Coca-Cola announced its 'World Without Waste' initiative, with the ultimate goal of recycling every bottle of packaging sold by 2030. The program included the launch last year of a new 13.2-ounce bottle made from 100 percent recycled plastic material.

Coca-Cola also announced Wednesday that most Dasani bottles in the U.S. and Canada will now be sold in 100 percent recycled plastic. The innovation is expected to reduce plastic waste by about 20 million pounds compared to 2019.
